almohler.jpgPredestinarian folk don't usually get a lot of "face time" in the MSM but Christianity Today recently did a story and now TIME has a story on how Al Mohler's predestinarian convictions square with his recent health struggles (HT: Justin Taylor)

"What is your only comfort..."

This item is getting chewed over on Freerepublic (http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-religion/1777198/posts). Scott Clark, you aren't allowed to go there -- you've got too much work to do and a family to pay attention to. :-)

Okay.

The Lee-Enfield was a rifle. Hmmm?

al mohler, i believe, sits on the board for focus on the family. i would be inclined to think that he is getting “face time” from the world not because of the presumed conundrum of having health problems and being Calvinist. rather, it is likely that because he is part of a sort of Evangelical elite that gets the world's ear because it plays by the rules of American religion: show us how it is practical, makes the world a better place and meets the felt needs of certain social-moral-cultural-political demographics. Do that and ye shall be heard. the fact that he is Calvinist, while seemingly the front and center issue, i would contend is ironically rather peripheral. he's someone “who counts” in the so-called culture wars. while i am loathe to portray any lantent sour grapes for their not getting "face time," I doubt confessional figures like Horton or Hart or Clark would get this sort of “face time” if such Calvinists fell on hard health times. "face time" seems to be a sign that perhaps something is a tad askew.

Well, Al represents an important (and we hope) growing segment in one of the largest evangelical bodies in the USA. Even if the real membership in the SBC is "only" 6 million, it still dwarfs the entirety of NAPARC. From the outside world I'm sure NAPARC doesn't exist while the SBC represents a formidable cultural force and includes at least two presidents (who planning to form their own denomination?). I can understand why they don't talk to us.

They do find Mike and Darryl's books have received some serious attention in parts of the MSM, but obscurity is part of living in the sideline denominations and that's fine.

exactly. i just fine there is something of a badge of honor in our obscurity! our Lord Himself never took a seat with the powers that be, as it were, and made friends for the good of the republic. i am reminded of your insightful words a bit back about the irony of theonomy (no, i am not trying to hang a theonomy label on folks) that the seeking to improve the world or transform it, no matter how well-intentioned, is simply not the point. and i think many figures/leaders who we otherwise have much in common don't get that as well as guys like you do. i appreciate it is complicated. but am i the only one who got a fistful of seventh day adventist literature mailers that announced the "first annual 10 commandments day" orchestrated by the usual suspects, including the guy who runs and sits next to mohler on the FOF board? :) sometimes it's like a bad kevin bacon joke: just a couple short hops and we find ourselves applauding those whom we also take to task! it's a strange existence sometimes.

anyway, keep up the great posting!
