Not for the Soul Patched Girlyman!!

WHAMCoverA1-Hi1.jpg "Not for the Soul Patched Girlyman!!" That's how Dr. Carl Trueman of Westminster East and blogger at Ref21 introduced a brief commendation of my book, With Heart and Mouth, over at the Ref21 blog. Now I know why I told my wife, "He's one of those guys that after meeting, I know within 5 minutes that he's my kind of guy." He likes Irish pubs, mocks the Reformed versions of revivalism in the form of endless "Reformed" conferences, and throws out references to Led Zepplin, Rush, and Ozzy whilst talking theology and culture.

Nice.

I just rocked-out to Led Zep driving to Detroit and back.

How was the smokey Irish pub Wed. Night?

Rick,

When you rock-out to the Kline Zepplin, then come talk to me!

Anyways, the pub was great. I found a kindred spirit.

What, exactly, is a "soul-patched girlyman?" Girlyman, I know. Soul-patched? At any rate, it's obviously nothing good--and definitely not Reformed.

"Kline Zepplin"?

Sounds like an unhealthy mix of cult and culture. Trueman would not approve.

Soul-patch, n. That stupid little piece of hair below the bottom lip and above the chin that is supposed to make pastor's look cool while their theology isn't.

I think Stellman as a soul patch. I guess one thing doesn't always attend the other. Besides, I can never decide which is Evangelical-Rick-Warren-cheesier, the patch or the goatee. I think I'll stick with classic bald-spot myself. It's also good for clapping with in public to humiliate wives and daughters.

Anyway, first, sorry we couldn't get up last week. I made up for it by throwing back a couple with Hart Wednesday night though.

Second, speaking of Hart and Trueman, what did you make of the latter's professed and heart-felt indebtedness to Evangelicals over confessionalists?

“It wasn’t the confessional Presbyterians who told me the gospel; it wasn’t the confessional Lutherans who took the time to teach me the basics of the faith; it was the evangelicals. They cared enough to reach out to me and engage me...I owe everything, almost all my theology, and much of my Christian nurture to such people.”

Here's what I thought:

Congrats, Danny. I am happy to hear of your helpful and well-written book getting more publicity.

But since when have you been into classic rock? :)

And, BTW, Zrimmy, Danny has a goatee of sorts! I think Trueman's comments about the soul-patch speak more about the PCA trying to be relevant than it does about SoCal.

Hey Mike,

I'm not the kind of afficionado that can quote lines or tell you who plays for The Who, but I know the difference between Roger Daltrey and Dee Snyder, Rush and Stryper!

I mostly listen to classical music and country, but can get into an Eddie Van Halen riff from time to time.

I need to get you some Clash and Radiohead, brother! ;)

And some Flogging Molly and Pogues, seeing that you are of Irish stock!

Mike,

Yeah, I noticed Dan's goatee when we threw back a couple a few months ago. That was a nuanced and good-natured shot at his facial hair.

DH,

Ignore Mike's afficionado requests. Keep up the everyman, ToC approach to music and tell me what you thought of Trueman's words about Evangelicals and confessionalists.

You guys are way too much fun to be pastors.

Can't say that I ever references Rush, Ozzy, or Zepplin. However, I have quoted Bon Jovi.

My supervisor has a "soul-patch" ... he's good friends with Trueman ... I'll have to ask him what he thinks about Trueman's Brummie accent that he tries to pass off for a Cambridge one!
